8: Bands

The first section to be knitted is usually the band, cuff, hem or basque. I will call it a band in this book. More often than not, the band will be in some kind of rib, probably because rib stitches are denser and stronger and don’t curl.

The bands at the side seam of the garment will look neat and professional if the edge stitches to be joined are alike, knit to knit, or purl to purl [pic 1].

Middle: Purl 2, knit 2 bands, finishing purl 2.
Bottom: Knit 1, purl 1 bands, finishing purl 1.
