26: Buttonholes

On the next row, knit to the buttonhole, turn to the purl side and cast on the same number of stitches that you cast off on the previous row [pic 5,6].

   
5: (left) Knit to the start of the buttonhole.
6: (right) Turn to purl side, cast on four stitches, turn back.

Turn back to the knit side and work to the next buttonhole or the end of the row.

Purl the next row across all stitches [pic 7,8].

   
7: (left) Work in purl across row, including cast on stitches.
8: (right) Buttonhole is finished.

The buttonhole is finished, but at each end there will be a loose stitch. It always happens [pic 9]!


9: Loose stitches show at each side of the buttonhole.
