These striking cushions are knitted in four identical diamond shaped sections. Half of each diamond is worked in graded rainbow colours, and then the diamond is completed in black, or the colour you choose as the base colour.

One cushion is in warm colours, the other in cool colours. To achieve the rainbow effect, you have to find two groups of 12 colours, chosen to range from yellow, through orange, to red, to cherry, to red-purple for the warm coloured cushion, and from chartreuse through green and aqua to blue, finishing with blue-purple for the second cushion. You will need four lengths of 460 cms or 180 ins in each colour. Colours from your stash or tapestry yarns can provide the colours.

But there is a much easier way to find the perfect colours!

A wonderful knitting shop in Melbourne, Australia is selling the rainbow kit I used for the cushions, and you can order the kit on line. The yarn is a beautiful 8ply loopy mohair and has been specially dyed by Marta, genius and owner of the exciting knitter’s paradise. Delivery will take less time than it would take to fish around to find the exact colours you will need, and the grading is perfect. The base colour will take 350 gr of any 8ply, DK or worsted yarn, or this can also be supplied in the same mohair as the rainbow. Just get in touch with Marta!

Materials:-

350 gr of base colour.
24 graded rainbow colours. 4 lengths of 460 cms (180 ins) of each colour.
5mm knitting needles (UK 6, US 8).
2 cushion inserts.

Measurements:-
(as pictured, will vary with yarn type)
55 cms (22 1/2 ins)

Tension:-

18 sts and 24 rows to 10cm (4 ins) over stocking stitch using 5 mm knitting needles.

(The tension for the cushions isn’t vital. You can actually use any needle and stitch size and yarns you want, but this tension above applies to the yarns in Marta’s kits.)
